Why We Invested: Tipspace

Startups don’t usually have five founders. It may even indicate a yellow or red flag for many analysts, who for this reason alone would no longer go ahead with the investment. However, João and the four other founders of Tipspace have shown us that they have a unique vision about the atmosphere of Games, the result of many years of experience working together.

We met the team when they had another startup and a different thesis, also inside the Gaming industry. They ended up migrating to a new business model, which made a lot of sense for Verve Capital as we considered it to be exponentially better than the previous model, in addition to having a lot of similarity with another company in our portfolio – Rei do Pitaco. It also caught our attention positively an integration that they recently made with a world giant in the industry. Only a “dream team” would be able to make such integration in such a short time; one more point for them.

What does Tipspace do?

It is a platform that allows players to test their skills against other players directly, safely, quickly and fairly by betting money in head to head matches. A place where friends can place bets with each other to “make matches more interesting”.

Until now, players had no other option to do this reliably and electronically. Thousands of them gathered on Discord servers, for example, to organize games, and everything was done in an amateur way; the players had no guarantee that they were at the same skill level, and no guarantee that the opponent would not cheat and, even worse, that they would call the bet in the end. Tipspace brings order and confidence to this disorganized world. And just like Poker sites, they make money with a percentage of the transacted volume.

The Fantastic Five

 The Market

Brazilians are known to be avid gamers, with a large and dedicated gaming community. The country has one of the largest gaming markets in Latin America. According to a Newzoo study, Brazil is the fourth largest gaming market in the world, with an estimated revenue of $4.9 billion in 2020 and over 70 million players.

Brazilians have a diverse taste in games and enjoy a variety of genres including action, adventure, sports and strategy. One of the most popular titles worldwide is “League of Legends”, an online multiplayer battle arena game. It has a massive base of players in Brazil and has led to the formation of hundreds of professional e-sports teams. E-sports are competitive video game events streamed online and watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world (the numbers are staggering!!).

The Gaming industry in Latin America has grown rapidly in recent years; the most relevant players in the global market are here. One of the main factors for that is the increasing availability of high-speed internet and a gigantic number of smartphones (in Brazil alone, there are approximately 150 million devices in use). This made it easier to access and play.

 Promising Beginning

The startup is still in its early days, but the start has been exciting. The initial metrics show a strong user acquisition, with a consistent decrease in CAC, which gives very clear signs that they have quickly found their Product-Market-Fit. The product roadmap is advanced and, other than adding new games and types of bets, they may soon explore other verticals, such as Fantasy Sports, for example. The first signs are very important in a startup, for better or for worse, so this beginning of Tipspace makes us confident that they will soon be heading to a big Series A round.

Verve Capital invested in Tipspace's Seed round, which was led by Upload Ventures.
