The popularity of digital currency across the globe has exploded in recent years and Brazil has been hot on the trend. Mercado Pago (the financial arm of Mercado Livre) announced the launch of cryptocurrency purchase and sale functionality through its app, reinforcing the tweet published by the platform's CEO, Marcos Galperin, a few days earlier.
Innovative as it is, the rest of the industry was not caught by surprise, with the platform having made moves in this direction over recent months. In May, for example, Mercado Pago acquired US$ 7.8 million in Bitcoin, justifying it as part of its broader treasury strategy.
The vice president of Mercado Pago in Brazil, Tulio Oliveira, estimates that approximately 20 million users will be able to buy virtual currencies through the application in the coming weeks. Is this the beginning of a new era for Brazilians?
